so okay starting page 99. um just one word of introduction uh this book is called a prayer book that's not exactly right um i would say with 80 of the contents of this book is not prayer what's called tafilah in hebrew is strictly the silent prayer the amidah the shema esri what you say with your feet standing together facing the most next most holy place this book has lots of other things in it the shema is not prayer his recital of psalms is not prayer the beginning blessings and it's not prayer the quotation of the mission is not prayer we are looking at what strictly speaking is called prayer now this text has about 450 words there are variations the safari world and the ashkenazi world within the ashkenazi world the safari world variations are very minor everyone has 19 blessings they're all in the same order the subjects are exactly the same there are very minor variations in vocabulary and no variation in theme the structure goes back 2 500 years and there have been minor variations over the centuries but the basic structure has served the jewish people for 2500 years um takes the average person who knows the hebrew who's done it before maybe five or six minutes to recite it the mission says there was a group of very pious people who used to take an hour to recite it you divide an hour by 450 you get about seven seconds per word
