I we started this yesterday this is Jacob's dream where he sees a ladder set between heaven and earth and he sees what we could call angels strictly in the Hebrew its agents of god ascending descending on it and God gives him a long promise that God is going to take care of we're up to the second half of verse 12 behold angels we could say or agents of God were ascending and descending on the ladder now our goal in this hour is literal logical investigation we're not doing symbolism or psychoanalysis or ancient belief systems or economics we're talking about what the words say and what on the basis of a logical analysis they could possibly mean and here there is an obvious difficulty if you're thinking of angels the normal thought is that the home base of the angels is in heaven they're gonna be sent on missions the round trip ought to be descending and ascending but the text puts ascending first so something's out of the ordinary something isn't doesn't fit the normal picture of the subject now I want to just introduce a category when you're interpreting a text there are two levels in which you could interpret one is you're trying to figure out what the text means you analyze it and you can deduce that it must mean this let us say at least this might mean
