0:00 In hisbodedus I feel more yishuv hada'as, a more settled mind. Day to day, when I go out, I feel less settled. Hisbodedus: Rebbe Nachman writes in Likutei Moharan, Part II, Torah 10: The reason people are far from Hashem, blessed be He, is that they have no yishuv hada'as, no settled mind. That comes first. And in Sefer HaMiddos he wrote: the Prayer of Chavakuk is a segulah for yishuv hada'as. In Part I, Torah 15, he says: whoever wants to taste the hidden light, to accustom himself to the secrets of the Torah, which he wants to uncover, the secrets of the Torah: he must judge himself, by himself.
0:30 He has to hold that judgment. If you come to hisbodedus, in Part II he says, Torah 25: hisbodedus is the highest level, greater than everything. You know that hisbodedus rectifies the root of the soul. When you are alone and speak to the Holy One, blessed be He, and pour out your whole heart before Him, you, at that moment, those moments, "And Yitzchak went out to converse in the field", that is the highest level, the greatest, the loftiest, for at that moment a person becomes simply himself.
0:57 When a person prays, within tefillah, you know, we have halachos: siman 90, siman 95, the laws of tefillah. For all the tefillos that we pray, one has to know how to pray. The Tur writes in siman 90: if a person thought a foreign thought during the tefillah, he should be silent. that he should not... during the tefillah. There are halachos within tefillah. In hisbodedus there is no halachah, there is nothing; you are above everything now. Now, at that moment, it is you and the Creator. You can speak with the Creator even about the tefillah itself.
1:21 To say to the Holy One, blessed be He: Master of the world, You know, today I prayed Minchah, I was confused, I did not concentrate properly. Hisbodedus is meant to bring you to the place where you can connect to the Holy One, blessed be He. That is why it is hard for a person to be an upright person without speaking with the Holy One, blessed be He, like a son to his father, as a man speaks to his friend. He needs hisbodedus. One cannot be a tzaddik and cannot be an upright person if he has no conversation between himself and his Maker. It cannot be.
1:45 It cannot; it is not realistic. How can one come out with that whole experience you have there, when you are in the field, and take it out with you? Because the moment I leave the field, you are back in life again... and it is different. when you are with people... Where do you do hisbodedus? That is the question. In the field. If you do hisbodedus in the field and you look at the sky, that is important. I will explain to you why. When you look up to the heavens, the gaze toward the heavens, looking at the heavens, brings humility.
2:14 The gaze toward the heavens draws a person afterwards, wherever he goes, to carry the heavens with him to every place. That is very important. "The heavens tell the glory of G-d, and the work of His hands..." In Tehillim, Psalm 19, David HaMelech says: "The heavens tell the glory of G-d, and the work of His hands..." You look at the sky, you already see all of creation, you understand many things, and then when you go out, after gazing at the heavens, you carry the gaze of the heavens on to all created things. You know, you have heard of Rabbi Yisrael Ber Odesser, the tzaddik who received a note from Heaven; have you heard of that?

2:46 He was one of the holy ones. He was a descendant of the Noda BiYehudah. a grandson of his: his grandfather's grandfather was the Noda BiYehudah. And he gave his very soul to draw close to Rebbe Nachman of Breslov. His family were Karlin chassidim. He truly gave his soul; he gave his blood, his children. Back then, in his time, people were not attached to Rebbe Nachman of Breslov. He gave his soul, his very blood, to fulfill these counsels of hisbodedus and tefillah, to fulfill everything as it should be.
3:13 He was the greatest disciple of Rabbi Yisrael Karduner. Rabbi Yisrael Karduner was the greatest disciple of Rabbi Moshe Breslover. Rabbi Moshe Breslover was the greatest disciple of Rebbe Nosson, and Rebbe Nosson of Rebbe Nachman. Now, they tell that once... they say this, they say of him, that he was one of the holy and hidden tzaddikim. I was at his grave many times, in Tiberias. Rabbi Yisrael Karduner is buried there in Tiberias. I was at his grave, in the cemetery there in Tiberias.
3:40 There is a very great light there. He was holy of holies, truly an immense and most awesome tzaddik, a hidden tzaddik. Do you know that he would go out to do hisbodedus every night in the field? Rebbe Nachman would be revealed to him; did you know that? Rebbe Nachman would be revealed to him, in the field where he went to do hisbodedus. In the field Rebbe Nachman would reveal himself to him. He would reveal himself because of his kedushah; he was immense, he was very holy. And in hisbodedus awesome and wondrous tikkunim come down for the soul, and it is something that cannot be explained, and it is the loftiest and most immense thing there is.
4:10 And so it is not for nothing: hisbodedus is the highest level, greater than everything. Even the wondrous tikkunim that Rebbe Nachman performs on Rosh Hashanah, one receives them in the hisbodedus that you do in the field. It is truly as if one is included in those wondrous tikkunim of the soul, and that is why it is the highest level, greater than everything. And a person should set himself a fixed time every day, even ten minutes. Rabbi Yitzchak Breiter writes in She'eris Yitzchak: We know, after all, that there are laws of salting meat.
4:36 To draw the blood out of the meat, it must be left for at least eighteen minutes, in the laws of salting. That is the plain meaning. Rabbi Yitzchak Breiter learns from this, on the inner level, that at least 18 minutes in the field, 18 minutes of hisbodedus, can cause a person to expel the murky blood. So there is great virtue in this. A person cannot do hisbodedus for an hour? It is hard for him to do an hour? Then let him not do an hour. But at least 18 minutes, with a stopwatch, with an alarm, look at the heavens, do hisbodedus, be an upright person. And this is a practice that many of the great tzaddikim followed.
5:09 There is Rabbi Avraham, the son of the Rambam; there is the Abarbanel; there is our master the Rambam, in his introduction to the Mishnah, to Tractate Avos. There is a great deal on this. One can learn of it in many works, many Rishonim, who wrote about it both in the word "hisbodedus" itself and by hint. From within their words you can understand that they wanted hisbodedus. What is the advice, Rav, for hisbodedus? To say something? The advice for doing hisbodedus properly: look to the heavens and pray to the Holy One, blessed be He. Pray what? Speak? "For I lift My hand to heaven." Always look, always, with your eyes to the heavens; do hisbodedus, speak to the Holy One, blessed be He, tell Him everything you are going through.
5:43 The Rebbe of Kotzk once said something beautiful: Do not tell the Holy One, blessed be He, how great your troubles are; tell your troubles how great the Holy One, blessed be He, is. It is so beautiful, this saying of his. So be happy, think good, and speak to Hashem. The most important thing is to be simple. Do not come to the Holy One, blessed be He, complicated. Guard your simplicity, your plainness, and be genuine. One cannot be a great, great tzaddik if he does not have hisbodedus. Because to be a true tzaddik one must be accustomed to this path, for this is the path that all the tzaddikim and all the holy ones were accustomed to. And the more a person has this, the more he is truly a man of truth. And whoever does not have this is drowning in all of this world.
6:22 He cannot truly be a holy, upright and truly clean person if he does not have it... He is not truly a tzaddik of truth. And that is why hisbodedus is important: it is the one thing a person should not let go of all the days of his life. You know what? I will tell you a beautiful story. You know, once, in the city of Uman, many, many years ago, they found there... there was a Jew; they were digging there, and they found a Jew, a simple man. They found him, a man who had passed away many years before, and they found him whole.
6:49 At about the age of seventy. They came to his wife, the widow, and the chassidim there asked her: How did he remain whole? She said to them: I do not know; he did not do anything. They said to her: Listen, this is a hidden tzaddik. How many years ago did he pass away, they said to her, twenty years ago? It cannot be that he is whole in the grave for twenty years. She said to them: Listen, he worked; he did not do anything. Listen, was he a Torah scholar? She told them: No. Did he give tzedakah? He had no money. So what did he do? Nothing.
7:16 They came the next day and said: There is no such thing, it cannot be; this is a tzaddik. She said to them: Listen, there is one thing he used to do. He would come every night at midnight and say to me: I am going to speak with Hashem. He would walk from side to side, do a little hisbodedus, a conversation with the Holy One, blessed be He. And that is what brought this about for him. They said to her: That is it. By the merit of this he is a tzaddik. You see, hisbodedus rectifies the root of a person's soul; it is the highest level. That is why Rebbe Nachman said he is "a new flask full of old wine": this is the conduct and the counsel that all the holy ones before us followed.
7:50 Everyone cried out: Breslov, Breslov, hisbodedus! That is not correct. Rebbe Nachman said explicitly that this is the whole conduct of all the holy ones, and he brought proof from the Torah: "And Yitzchak went out to converse in the field." Yitzchak Avinu; what is that? What is this about Yitzchak Avinu? What did he go to do? Why is it not written "And Yitzchak went out to pray"? What is this, "And Yitzchak went out to converse in the field"? Conversation. He went to pour out his tefillah before the Holy One, blessed be He. And that is why Mashiach... Mashiach is in hisbodedus all day long. We do not know where in the world he is, but all day he is in hisbodedus.
8:20 What is "Mashiach"? What does the word mean? All day he prays to the Holy One, blessed be He. He does not learn; he prays all day. Think about it: maybe he learns too, we do not know. But it is certain that he prays a great deal, because "Mashiach" comes from the expression "mesiach tefillah", one who converses in tefillah. One must pray to the Holy One, blessed be He, because tefillah is the highest and most exalted thing there is before the Holy One, blessed be He. This is learned in the Yerushalmi, Berachos, chapter 9, halachah 1. Good tidings and salvations from Heaven.
8:45 Thank you very, very much, everyone. Thank you.
