v'es hachesed and the kindness as it was said which He promised to your forefathers." Rashi is troubled by the word Eikev, the name of our sedra. What exactly does it mean? He could have used a lot of other words. "V'haya ki sishme'un es Hamishpatim." Why Eikev Tishme'un? So, Rashi famously says this, "V'haya Eikev Tishme'un, im hamitzvos kalos, if the light of mitzvos she'adam dosh ba'akevav, which a person normally tramples on with his heel, tishme'un, if you keep those, if you listen and keep those, then v'shamar Hashem yishmor lecha es habris v'es hachesed, Hashem will keep His promise to you." What exactly does that mean? So, my dear brother-in-law, Rabbi Jeremy Fine, has a beautiful sefer on the parsha, The Hearts of the Parsha, and he makes a fascinating insight. He's referring to a mishna in the gemara in Megillah, which appears in Megillah daf chof talmud beis. The mishna there says, it's talking about nesias kapayim, duchaning. The mishna says, "Kohen she'yeish b'yadov mum, if a kohen has certain blemishes on his hands, lo yisa es kapav, he should not duchen." Rebbi Yehuda omer, "Af misha'ahu yadov tzuvo'os, even if his hands uh colored with satam, with um stain, with uh with stasis, like a dye, and therefore his hands are all colored and they're very sort of dis- distracting, lo yisa es kapav, mipnei she'am mistaklim bo, because the people will look at the hands, which is a problem during Birchas Kohanim, and therefore he should uh that sort of makes him invalid to to duchen.
