[Applause] [Music] the saddest day in the jewish calendar is the day of tishev perhaps it is the only day that we are told to be sad we cry we sit on the floor we mourn why why are we supposed to be why why are we supposed to be sad why are we supposed to cry what is the purpose of all of this what is the point of all of this we're always told that hashem wants us to be happy happiness not sadness not depression the atish above that's what we do for 24 hours what's the lesson what's the point what's the purpose my grandmother is a survivor of my grandmother is a survivor of auschwitz she was a 16 year old girl when the nazis invaded her town of vats and they took her onto the cattle carts the famous kamakarts where they would load hundreds of people onto these boxes were maybe able to hold 50 60 people and they would stand next to each other crammed together and they would stand for hours and they would stand for hours and my grandmother would repeat and tell us what it was like standing in those cattle carts and she would tell us how cold it was how freezing they were when she would tell us the story you would see how her body began to shake because she would still feel that coldness and eventually they would reach their destination of auschwitz of the death camp and most of auschwitz of the death camp and most didn't survive on one of those cattle carts there was a group of about a hundred people crammed inside and there was one lady that was wearing her coat and her coat had these big buttons big deep round buttons she pulled the button over her coat and inside of her package she took with
