On these words the Midrash relates an extraordinary startling story which is very much connected to the theme of the great holiday this week Lag Ba'omer the yahrzeit the 33rd day of the counting of the Omer the 18th day of Iyar which is going to be this week the yahrzeit of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai the great Talmudic second century sage one of the greatest sages leaders in Jewish history Rabbi Nachman Shimon his father's name was Yochai. Also known as the author of the most foundational Kabbalistic text the Zohar the Book of Light and traditionally passed away on Lag Ba'omer buried in Meron in the Galilee in Israel and over the years hundreds of thousands of Jews gathered there on the day of his yahrzeit dancing celebrating feasting singing with the famous uh bonfires lit
