Every person throughout their life often feels a conflict between the body and the soul. Spiritually, one wants to rise to be in a higher place. Am I a spiritual person in a high place or am I a very materialistic even animalistic person drawn to very low places? This conflict which can be embarrassing may lead people to extremes. Some are may lead people to extremes. Some are drawn to the extreme of spirituality trying to be very spiritual to the point where they view the body as an enemy to fight against. This phenomenon is found among certain monks and aesthetics. There are those in various approaches around the world who see the body as the enemy.
