Every person throughout their life often feels a conflict between the body and the soul. Spiritually, one wants to rise to be in a higher place. But there is also the body with its desires that pull a person downward. Sometimes a person doesn't even know how to identify themselves. Am I a spiritual person in a high place or am I a very materialistic even animalistic person drawn to very low places? This conflict which can be embarrassing may lead people to extremes. Some are drawn to the extreme of spirituality trying to be very spiritual to the point where they view the body as an enemy to fight against. This phenomenon is found among certain monks and aesthetics. There are those in various approaches around the world who see the body as the enemy. In order to be spiritual, they fight against it, afflict their bodies through fasting and abstinence, and refrain from marrying, thinking that marriage is a surrender to certain desires. Even if he marries a woman, he may prefer to live as a monk for his whole life, living in poverty and deprivation, dressing in a very humble way and not enjoying anything. He refuses to give the body anything, and thus he leans toward the spiritual extreme. On the other hand, there are those who lean toward the other extreme, trying to suppress every spiritual feeling and instead follow the desires of the body sinking into very low places.
