so i want to begin at the very beginning and talk about ourselves in our mother's wombs and when i teach students i don't care whether they're very advanced whether they're learning turf for the first time whether they're people going through what my sister calls the scenic route in life that they're struggling with their judaism i will always always always look for an excuse to talk about ladders what do i mean when i say the word ladders so every single one of us started our lives every single one of us started our lives during the nine months in our mother's womb we believe that you and i became who we are that moment that we became a fertilized ovum with a neshama attached we were already ourselves and in the womb the talmud the gemara in nida 30b describes that for those nine months in our mother's womb we were not just sitting there physically growing but we were spiritually growing we had a spiritually growing we had a personalized angel that came down into our womb according to the kabbalistic tradition that angel stays with us through the nine months and returns at the 120th birthday up there in heaven to give over testimony that absolutely everything without exception absolutely everything that we need to know to climb our own personal ladder was given to us inside our womb what do i mean by a ladder
