The opening of this shiur, in Rabbi Daniel Glatstein’s own words — taken from the captions, so names and Hebrew terms may be approximate.

Tisha B'Av is the most tragic day on the Jewish calendar. From time immemorial, Tisha B'Av has been a lightning rod of disaster for our people. From the very first Tisha B'Av, when the Meraglim came back with their bad report about Eretz Yisrael. The first Beit Hamikdash was destroyed on Tisha B'Av, the second Beit Hamikdash, and throughout history the Spanish expulsion was scheduled for Tisha B'Av. The Jews were banished from England on Tisha B'Av, from France on Tisha B'Av. World War I broke out on Tisha B'Av. Yirmiyahu, who was born on Tisha B'Av, cursed the day of his birth. And even so, Tisha B'Av is given a very unusual title in Megillas Eichah. Tisha B'Av is called a Mo'ed. Kara alai mo'ed leshaber bachurai. A Mo'ed? How is Tisha B'Av a Mo'ed? Mo'ed refers to a festival, a holiday. Tisha B'Av is anything but a Mo'ed. And this is not just a figure of speech, but this has halachic implications. We don't say Tachanun on Tisha B'Av because it's a Mo'ed. We don't even say Tachanun on the Mincha before Tisha B'Av. How is Tisha B'Av a Mo'ed? The following story that I'd like to share with you about my grandfather, zichron tzaddik livracha, Harav Mordechai Leib Glatstein, gives and provides some insight into the festive nature of Tisha B'Av. You see, after the war was over, my grandfather, of blessed memory, was interviewed by the secular media. My grandfather had been in all the dark
