ophy I envisioned myself as part of a group of people who were going to Enlighten the world set the world straight um rid the world of certain terrible mistakes and create a more reasonable and um logical way of analyzing problems so of and so on boy was I naive go uh the same problems repeat themselves year after year decade after decade generation it seems like uh a NeverEnding battle to make the same points over and over again I don't know I think a psychologist is needed to explain why that is tonight I want to discuss some of the more common and uh um damaging errors that one hears in discussion especially on campus but uh not only on campus one here political discussions where a position is taken or a challenge is issued which sounds logical sounds unbeatable I would call them showstoppers you know and they undo the opposition or they undo the entire discussion and they are totally incompetent totally illogical yet when you hear them it's like a paralysis you don't know how to respond you feel that the ground has been taken out from under your feet and you're just left without any way to to respond um so I'd like to take you through some of those and maybe we'll be able to learn some general lessons as we go through a couple I've done before but I didn't do them in as much detail and some I have not done before and I hope this will work as a kind of inoculation and immunization against this kind of um unthinking uh unthinking challenge let's start with what is supposed to be the Philosopher's battlecry Define your terms we're talking about Good and Evil or truth or knowledge or reality or
