With God's help, as we continue studying the wisdom of King Solomon in the book of Proverbs, we reach the next verse where Solomon addresses a very common phenomenon. Sometimes a person, whether out of arrogance, carelessness, or a dismissive attitude belittles something or someone he should never belittle. It may be a person. It may be a situation. It may even be an object. Let us read Solomon's words. Whoever mocks will be harmed by it, but Whoever mocks will be harmed by it, but one who fears a mitzvah will be rewarded. Proverbs 13:13. If a person displays scorn towards something that deserves respect, Solomon warns, that very thing may eventually harm him physically, emotionally, or spiritually. As always, Solomon is brief and profound. Our sages in Pirkei Avot expand on this idea. Pirkei Avot, chapter 4, Mishnah 3. chapter 4, Mishnah 3. Do not despise any person and do not dismiss anything, for there is no person who does not have his moment and no thing that does not have its place. Do not despise any person. Even if you currently hold a high position and someone appears beneath you, you think, "Who is he? I will never need him." The Mishnah says, "Do not look down on any human being. Every person was created in the image of God." As the Mishnah later states, As the Mishnah later states, "Beloved is the human being, for he was created in the image of God." Whether he is Jewish or not, we are forbidden to marry outside our faith, but we are absolutely commanded to show respect and never to degrade others. And do not dismiss anything. The Hebrew word mephaleg means to push away, to separate yourself as if something has no worth. The Mishnah teaches, "Do not rush to label anything as worthless because
