Shalom Aleichem. Welcome to a special shiur. This coming Shabbos - Parshas Terumah - and it is also Parshas Shekalim. What's Parshas Shekalim? Well, our sages established four Shabbosos before Pesach to let us know of the forthcoming Yom Tovim. Parshas Shekalim refers to the Mishnah in Masechta Shekalim. Shekalim means money/coins. And the Parshah speaks about the Jews giving a half-shekel to the Mishkan. A half-shekel - not much, a half - as is well known that we give a half because no one is complete without somebody else. You and somebody else, you each give a half-shekel, you have a whole shekel. You have something whole, something wholesome. But the idea behind it is the charity. The Mishnah says: B’echad b’Adar mashmi’in al haShekalim. On the first day of Adar, there's an announcement that goes out that everybody should prepare their half-shekel. Once a year, you had to give a half-shekel to the Mishkan. So this is what it's about - Parshas Shekalim on the first day of Adar. Why? Because you have a whole month. You need - the new year required for sacrifices was the month of Nisan. So we give the half-shekel, we start collecting it in the month of Adar before Nisan, so that we’re prepared. But there are four Parshiyos. The first one is Shekalim. The second one is Zachor, which always comes out the week before Purim. And then, after Purim, they call Parshas Parah - they speak about bringing the sacrifice of the Parah - the red heifer, which is burned. And the ashes are used to purify the people from any impurities. And the final Shabbos, just before Rosh Chodesh Nisan, is called Shabbos HaChodesh,
