The shiur in English

0:00 Be joyful — amen. Always think good thoughts — amen. To cleave to Hashem, blessed be He. You know, the tefillin — the tefillin: our holy Rebbe, Rabbi Nachman of Breslov, writes in Likutei Moharan, Torah 38, that the sign of cleaving to the Holy One, blessed be He, is tefillin. when a person wants to know whether he is cleaving to the Holy One, blessed be He — tefillin. The tefillin are a person's bond with the Holy One, blessed be He. That is the bond.

0:28 What other word is similar to 'tefillin'? Tefillah. Right? Tefillin. Tefillah is the language of tefillin — to draw close to the Holy One, blessed be He. A person who at every moment turns to the Holy One, blessed be He, and prays to the Holy One, blessed be He — the highest light in the world shines upon him. Now, a Jew — it makes no difference where he is. The moment he prays to the One Who created the world — be he in the desert, be he wherever he may be — he connects to the highest place.

0:56 All that the Holy One, blessed be He, wants from you now — whatever is happening in Heaven, the Holy One, blessed be He, says: 'Look, look at So-and-so — right now he is praying to Me.' And the whole reason we came down to this world is to reveal the secret of tefillah. If we only knew what the power of tefillah is — of simply turning to the Holy One, blessed be He, of simply lifting the eyes to Heaven, the face. When a person lifts his eyes to the Holy One, blessed be He, lifts his face to Heaven, he goes out from the level of an animal to the level of a human being. As long as a person does not merit tefillah, he is on the level of an animal, because his head is down all the time.

1:28 But when a person merits a true level of tefillah, then he merits the level of 'adam.' 'You are called adam, and the nations of the world are not called adam.' So a person who truly merits it — how can a person know whether he has merited the secret of tefillah in full, Tefillah is not only when we pray it with kavanah, and pray. Tefillah is when a person feels the Holy One, blessed be He — when he is joyful after he prays, when he feels alive. The Maggid of Zlotchov had the practice of keeping a fast of speech every day, for an hour after the tefillah he is in a fast of speech. He is in a fast of speech — he does not say a thing. An hour after the tefillah he is in a fast of speech. He says: 'I have spoken with Hashem, blessed be He.' That is the pious men of old, who would wait an hour before and an hour afterward.

2:04 That is how the Maggid of Zlotchov would wait: an hour in a fast of speech, praying to the Holy One, blessed be He. See how important the virtue of tefillah is. After you have prayed... if a person wants to know whether he is truly close to the Holy One, blessed be He: he is joyful, and he thinks about how to better his deeds. This is the greatest and loftiest thing there is in the world: to do good to the creations, to human beings, all of them — to bring them all to the level of tefillah, all of the creations — 'so that they may come to know Him,' that all should recognize the Holy One, blessed be He.

2:36 'So that they may come to know Him' — that everyone should recognize the Holy One, blessed be He. And that is the highest level we have in tefillah. That is why on Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, the times of judgment, we increase our tefillos and supplications. The eyes are on Heaven the whole time — to the Holy One, blessed be He, to the King, to the King. 'The Holy King' — that is the purpose. That is what the Holy One, blessed be He, wants: that we all serve Him and always cleave to Him, blessed be He. To think always about the true purpose. Have pity on the purpose.

3:02 Have pity on the purpose: what will be the end of a person? In the end, when after a hundred and twenty years they carry him to the grave — And what will he take with him? Nothing. To have pity on the true, eternal purpose; to run to Hashem, blessed be He; to grab everything possible in this world: more kedushah, more tefillah, more cleaving, more holiness of the eyes, more thought, more of the bris — that is the purpose. This whole world is not worth even a single sigh. To reveal His G-dliness, blessed be He, in all the worlds.

3:26 And may it be His will that we merit to be redeemed with an upraised hand, with our Master, the Creator, blessed be He, our King, at our head. So may it be His will, and let us say: Amen.
