hi everyone welcome to another edition of the far chatter podcast on this episode of the podcast I'm going to be joined by professor professor Franchesca trado who is the Andrew W melon professor of history at The Institute The Institute of advanced study in in Princeton New Jersey and we'll be discussing the Jews of lorno and the city um which was discussed in her book which was published a number of years ago called the familiarity of strangers the saric diaspora learno and crosscultural trade in the early modern crosscultural trade in the early modern period uh the book is a little bit more on the economic and the economic networks of Laro but we'll get into some of that as well so thank you Professor chval for joining me well thank you Naki for having me my pleasure so why you start off tell the listeners a little bit about yourself and your background well as you said um I approached the topic uh primarily as a scholar of uh the uh pre-industrial economic world of commercial networks of uh business commercial networks of uh business networks and um I have always been extremely interested in how marginal groups and particularly Jews um have uh defined the relationship between capitalism and modernity um I was not trained I should say as a Jewish historian I'm not a Jewish myself um but um I think uh that what uh in um I think uh that what uh in particularly in in Israel in in the Departments of General history it's you know in some universities it's called Department of General histories um that uh it is the Jewish history can be of enormous relevance to understand larger patterns of change uh in in my case in the history uh of Europe um and so um I also uh came across some extraordinary primary sources in archives which are
