The Torah portion we will read, God willing, this Sabbath is Vayeshev, for the year 5783. Our portion deals with the sale of Joseph. It is known to all that the sale of Joseph is a sin for which we suffer to this very day. As it is said in the words of our Sages in the Midrash Yalkut Shimoni, Rabbi Judah said regarding the sale of Joseph: " Those killed by the monarchy were handed over only because of the sale of Joseph." The author says, he says ten from every generation, and yet that same sin lingers. Also the sin of the Golden Calf, the Torah says, "And on the day I make my reckoning, I will visit their sin upon them." The Sages teach: There is no punishment that comes upon Israel that does not contain some element of the Golden Calf. The Meshech Chochmah, in Parashat Acharei Mot, explains what we say in the Yom Kippur prayer: "For You are a forgiver of Israel and a pardoner of the tribes of Jeshurun.""For You are a forgiver of Israel," so why must we say "and a pardoner of the tribes of Jeshurun"? The Meshech Chochmah says: There are two roots of sin. The root of sins between man and his fellow is the sale
