Good evening. The verse before us from the words of King Solomon, the wisest of all men, is a well-known verse that appears in the book of Proverbs. This proverb offers practical guidance for parents in everything that relates to communication between parents and children. Sometimes a parent feels the need to discipline a child and today there are very extreme approaches. The deeper message speaks about the relationship between the holy one, relationship between the holy one, blessed be he, and us, our father in heaven. King Solomon says, "He who spares his rod hates his son, but he who loves him disciplines him diligently." Let us first understand the simple meaning of the words, "What is a rod? A rod is a stick. He who spares his rod refers to a person who does not use the stick." But the commentators explain that this does not mean a physical stick used to strike a child. Rather, it used to strike a child. Rather, it refers to the opposite. As the verse continues, he who loves him disciplines him. In other words, he speaks with him. He guides him. It does not say he who loves him strikes him. He who spares his rod refers to a person who withholds the stick of speech, meaning proper guidance through words.
