How much effort am I really required to invest when it comes to making a living, finding a spouse, building a career, or growing spiritually? Are these things entirely in my control, or are they ultimately in heaven's hands? Let's take a closer look at how Judaism defines faith and trust in God versus human effort. On one hand, the Torah clearly demands that a person make an effort. We cannot simply sit at home an effort. We cannot simply sit at home doing nothing, saying, "I believe in God, so I trust that he will send me food, money, a livelihood, and everything else I need in life." The Torah commands us to act. As it says in several verses, "God will bless you in everything you do." In other words, you need to put out your hand and do your part and then God will bless your efforts. But this raises big questions. If God created me and provides for me, If God created me and provides for me, why does he require me to work for it? Why doesn't he just give me everything I need the way parents provide for a child? What is the purpose of all this effort? Where is the boundary between human responsibility and divine providence? Many young people struggle with this. How do I choose a career? What should I focus on? And what should I leave aside? To answer this, let's first look at the words of King Solomon in Proverbs 10:5.
