The weekly parasha that we'll read G-d willing this Shabbat is Parashat Ki Tetze of the year 5778 The parasha begins like this: "When you go out to war against your enemies and you take his captives" "and Hashem your G-d delivers them into your hands" "and you take his captives" "and you see among the captives a beautiful woman" "and you desire her, you may take [her] for yourself as a wife" Our Sages ask a very well known question The Holy Book of the Zohar and other commentaries also refer to this Why does the Torah begin with a verb in the singular: "Ki tetze" but "your enemies" is in the plural? Then: "Hashem your G-d delivers them into your hands"- again singular "you" If we are talking here about a war against our enemies then it should have used the plural "you" "All of you go out to war", "Hashem delivers them into the hands of all of you" Because a person doesn't go out to war on his own A whole army goes out to war, not one person alone So what's the meaning of: "When you go out to war"? It should have said: "When (all of) you go out..." in the plural Because many people are going out to war Nobody goes out to war on his own! So why is the singular form "Ki tetze" used here? This is the question asked by the Zohar and other commentaries
