are in the book of Vayikra, Leviticus, in Parshas Shmini. In the book of Devarim, Deuteronomy, Moshe Rabbeinu repeats many of the halachas of Torah, many of the laws, including also the signs of kosher. We all know when it comes to behemos, which means mammals, the Torah gives the Jewish people two identifying signs of how to determine a kosher from a non-kosher animal. To quote the pesukim, the verses in Parshas Re'eh, that's Devarim perek yud daled, Deuteronomy chapter 14, the Torah says, "V'chol behema, any animal, any mammal, which is mafreset parsa, it has split hooves, that's sign number one, and sign number two is ma'alas geira, it chews its cud, it regurgitates its food, oiso se'cheilu, those are the animals that are permissible for Jewish consumption, they are deemed kosher." And then he goes on to give a list of four animals that have one sign and not both signs. He says, "Achazal lo yisochlu, mimayli hagayro umafrisa haparsa." The fascinating thing here is that when the Torah wants to identify animals that have one of the signs, it gives a list of four animals. You would think the Torah would just say, "If an animal has only one sign, it's not good." When it comes to that one sign, the Torah identifies four species. It lists that there are four animals that have one sign. And this is extremely significant because if somebody was writing a document thousands of years ago without exposure to the full contact to the full planet and without the technology and the maps of Google Earth and the research that has been done over all the continents of our planet to identify all the types of species that exist from Australia or New Zealand to South America up in the North Pole, down in the South Pole
