We know that the as a result of the Meraglim, the Jewish people uh did not survive the midbar. Those between 20 and 60 passed away during the course of those 40 years. Tosefta Taanis 11B says that the joy of Tu B'Av is the Masei Midbar stopped dying. The Rashbam explains in Bava Basra in Bava Basra and Tosefta quotes it that for 40 years uh they didn't die throughout the 40 years. Instead, on Tisha B'Av 21,000 people died. Exactly. Says Tosefta, what does that mean? It means in 40 years 15,000 died. In 40 years 15,000 died. So that's a good calculation. There's that's a good calculation. There's 600,000 Jews. 40 * 15,000 is 600,000. Fine. But what does the Rashbam mean 21,000 died a year? So Rav Dovid Oppenheim it's quoted in the end of Shaalos U'Tshuvos Chavas Yair brought in the Sefer Pnei Yitzchak. He says something amazing. He brings that if Tisha B'Av came out on Shabbos, they didn't die. Why? Tosfos says on Tisha B'Av they Why? Tosfos says on Tisha B'Av they would make their kever. You can't make a kever. You can't dig on Shabbos. So, on Tisha B'Av shechaliyus b'Shabbos, they didn't dig their kever. Now, the miraglim were sent in year two. So, that means year one and year two they didn't die. And also the g'zeirah stopped a year before they entered Eretz Yisrael. Like Tosfos says. So, that means they only died 37 years. First two years are out, the last year is out.
