appreciate it. Thank you for gracing us. And uh for the effort it took to be here with us to learn this morning. So, welcome to everybody. And whoever's listening online, we have a big snow here in uh New York. We had a big beautiful snow here. So, I want to explore with you today a uh small but seemingly very disturbing scene in Parshas Vayeitzei. It's the opening of the 30th chapter of Bereishis, chapter 30 of Genesis. And it's only two verses. But they demand a profound I think a profound explanation. The background of the story is that Yaakov was deceived into marrying Leah. He worked seven years to marry Rachel. But at the last moment, we all know there was a switch and he marries Leah. And as the Torah says that Leah yearning for her husband's affection she names all of her first four children with names that represent this hope. Reuben and Shimon and Levi and Yehuda and then even some later children. Rachel his first and beloved choice is infertile. As the Torah says Vayachel Akarah, she's barren, she can't have any children. Her older sister already gave birth to four children. Reuven, Shimon, Levi, Yehuda and Rachel her sister was waiting for her first. The opening of chapter 30 states these words Parshas Vayeitzei the beginning of perek lamed and I'm going to quote. Vateireh Rachel ki lo yaldah l'Yaakov. Rachel saw that she had not bore any children to Yaakov. Vat'kanei Rachel b'achotah. Rachel envied her sister. Vatomer el Yaakov havah li banim v'im ayin meitah anochi. So she says to her husband Yaakov, give me children. If not, I am dead. Vayichar af Yaakov b'Rachel. And Yaakov became angry with Rachel. Vayomer and he says
