Our parasha in parashat Bamidbar begins with a responsibility that falls on Moshe Rabbenu. Hakadosh Baruch Hu asks Moshe Rabbenu, he says um [clears throat] in Bamidbar Sinai b'Ohel Mo'ed b'echad lachodesh hashani bashana hashani uh the Torah goes to great lengths to be able to tell you when Hashem told it this to him. But whatever it was, Hashem said to him. But whatever it was, Hashem said to Moshe Rabbeinu, "Seu et rosh kol adat Bnei Yisrael. I want you to count every single Jewish person lemishpechotam lebeit avotam, according to their families, according to their father's house, bemispar shemot, in the number of their names, kol zachar legulgelotam, each male according to their according to their heads, okay?" So Moshe is commanded to count the Jewish people. That's his obligation over here. over here. Rashi numerous times has told us that God has various reasons as to why he's going to count the Jewish people. Sometimes he's counting Jews because he wants to he wants to know how many were left after a devastating plague. How many are there? So he counts them. Sometimes he counts the Jewish people because there's a reason why they're needed. They're needed to to ensure that that there's a job that's being done. As
