With the help of God, this holy Sabbath is the festival of Sukkot, and the scripture says, "And you shall rejoice in your festival, and you shall be only happy." So our rabbis warned greatly about the work of joy all year round, and especially on this holy festival, for all festivals learn from that festival day which is called in the verse simply "the festival"—the festival of Sukkot. The Rebbe of Sukkot , again, the Ba'al Shem Tov, says that it is a mistake to think that serving God with joy, or being joyful in general, is an extra. He says this is not true. It is not an addition to serving God, but the essence. The essence of the Jew. And especially one who serves God, it is to serve the Holy One, blessed be He, and to live with joy. If a person lives without joy, if a person is in a reality where the preoccupations of this world, all the engagement with the world, even in necessary things, cause him to move away from the point of joy, he loses his connection to Him who spoke and the world came to be.
