the yeshiva dotnet okay good morning everybody and welcome they tell an anecdote about a German man who came to his Catholic priest one Sunday for confession as is the tradition in Catholicism and he says yes Father I am here to confess what have you done my son he says during the war I hid a Jew in my attic and I'm here to confess and the precess to him son it's not a sin you saved the life of another human being you saved the life of the people who preceded and mothered our religion it's not a sin at all no no father I have to confess he says what I charged the Jew 50 marks every week to keep him in my attic and the priest says my son maybe was not the most noble thing to do to charge somebody to save their life but you know what if he would rent your attic in a good day he would pay rent and you charged him this money not only to stay there but to save his life to conceal him from the Gestapo this is not a sin my dear son he's his father father I have one more question am i obligated to tell him that the war is over so confession this sometimes not what it looks like and today I want to be ambitious and make a bold suggestion and that is that we bring confession back to Judaism now confession is usually not associated with Judaism the word confession although we have plenty of confession in Judaism but what most Jews hear the word confession they associate it with a very different way of thinking and a different religion with booths and Sundays we spend our Sundays in Costco not confessing but there's another dimension to confession that we're often unaware of the word confession in Hebrew
