so we're talking about national traditions which describe a national experience the ancestors of the people who have the tradition are described as having an experience which we would expect would change the life of the nation and i said that we're talking about national traditions over the world national experiences not necessarily having anything to do with religion they could be wars they could be technological inventions they could be migrations they could be pestilences and i said there's not a single one that's known to be false not one and therefore human experience that includes all of humanity i stress this because always i get someone saying but you're just assuming that what the book says is true and you're assuming judaism is true absolutely not i'm assuming anything kind i'm calling it into question i'm wondering what reason we have to accept it as true so we don't have any known cases that are false now i imagined a critic yesterday who said rabbi you're telling us to trust this tradition we have the tradition and we're supposed to trust that it's true i can easily imagine scenarios whereby this tradition could be created and not be true it could be the priests who feed mescal into the population and whip them into a frenzy and then tell them there was a national revelation or it could be the soldiers who kill out all the history teachers and put soldiers in as history teachers and teach little children this funny story
