there are some subjects which don't get too much attention from jewish writers surely not too much from jewish thinkers and one of them is the emotions my reviews that sound the boston heavy work to a great extent about emotions and i'll explain to you as we go along why and some of the things that he said but um i want to do just a little bit of philosophical background to set the stage there was a very common view of philosophy say 300 years ago and i think it's largely been outgrown though you might find it here and there and that is emotions are just things that happen to people they just happen in fact uh 300 years ago the word for emotions was passions the word passion comes from a root meaning passivity it just happens something that happens to you it happens that happens there'll be no way to talk about it as being right or wrong certainly couldn't have any rules about emotions what voices you should or should not have they're impossible to control they're just things that happen to you like catching the flu it happens you might have to deal with it but it's just something that happens well people did appreciate that in one respect you could talk about emotions as unfortunate because some emotions prompt you to act in certain ways sometimes the way you act might be productive might be healthy worthwhile and sometimes not certain emotions produce certain actions quite regularly and sometimes the world in which we live needs those actions we need those actions sometimes not that's like fear generates defensive behavior either trying to protect oneself or running away that's great if you're in danger then running away or defending yourself is useful behavior
