The Yanuka — Rav Shlomo Yehuda

The shiur in English

The Yanuka’s own words in this shiur, translated into English by Lehallel · 814 words · 4:05. Press a time to hear it said.

0:00 Chayei Sarah — "the life of Sarah" — is until now, truly until now. For the meaning is that every time, every moment and every second that she continued in the world with such holiness, she did not despair and did not fall into despair over her salvation. For she could have fallen into despair; as much as she was a woman of faith, she could have fallen into despair and said, 'There will be no salvation for me.'

0:27 and given up on herself completely, Heaven forbid. But she said, 'Perhaps this is a tikkun from Hashem; there is a purpose in this delay, and from this delay will come specifically good.' And she rejoiced in Hashem that this whole delay is truly for the good, and it truly turned around for her: she lived, and did not waste her life, For after all, another person could have said, 'What, she wasted her life, and at the end of her time, to give birth like this?' But "the life of Sarah" — to tell you, "the life of Sarah" — that she lives until today.

0:54 And that the salvation came at the end does not mean that one no longer lives. It means that life begins — and here she is, living until today. We remember and live her light, and she rises and lives and is elevated. This says to each one of us, that when a person does not see his salvation coming, let him not think that the time is being wasted, Heaven forbid. You will enjoy, and you will have a good life, and everything will work out.

1:21 As it says: "Gladden us according to the days You afflicted us, the years we saw evil." "Let Your work be seen by Your servants, and Your glory upon their children" — that the more a person... whatever a person goes through in fasts, when a person suffers and bitterness passes over him, everything turned around for him for the good. Even the little child who goes in the morning to the house of Hashem and puts his hand on the entrance of the Talmud Torah, and his hand is cold from the handle, from the cold — even for this moment that he touched, for this cold, he will have reward in the World to Come.

1:52 Even for the cold over which a person suffers — the very smallest cold — he will receive a great reward for it, far beyond measure, in the World to Come. That is the great, tremendous and mighty meaning of this thing. How very important it is to believe that there is good hope for our future. That is the meaning of Chayei Sarah. For her level is tremendous: all that she went through, and all the humiliations, and all the disgraces, and all the pain and bitterness, and all that passes over her — she laughs, and she rejoices, and she is happy, and she knows that she will live forever. She is not jealous of anyone, and does not despair, and only lives her life.

2:31 And so, in fact, this is "the life of Sarah", because this is a figure one must learn from how to live, and to understand that one serves Hashem with the tools and the levels that I have, whether at a hundred years, whether at twenty years, whether at seven years, whether you received the vessel of a child of seven, who is truly young and small, and foolish, and does not really understand things, and has not yet attained what he attained.

3:00 whether twenty years, when you received the strength of a mighty warrior, of an army, of one who can fight the wars of Hashem — you received, you merited the level of a tzaddik — or a hundred years, a hundred years, which is old; he has no more strength, he is weak and he cannot move. The level of "the life of Sarah" is that she lives even at a hundred years.

3:26 Even when she had old age and difficulties, and cannot move, and sadness and despair fall upon her, old age — she serves Hashem. And at seven years, when there is no vitality and one cannot pray and there is no strength, nevertheless she holds herself in faith and strengthens herself and does not despair; and at twenty years, of course, she merited what she merited. For each one goes through what he goes through, and the main thing is to hold ourselves in the trait of trust, in the trait of hope and eternity, not to fall into despair, Heaven forbid.

3:55 To be mighty, to be strong, and to believe that Hashem will save us. May it be His will that the Holy One, blessed be He, help us, that we have help from Heaven, that we have a Shabbos shalom.
