What’s said in this shiur
The opening of this shiur, in Rabbi Avigdor Miller’s own words — taken from the captions, so names and Hebrew terms may be approximate.
It says in this week's parashah Kedoshim tiyu, that we you should be holy. Imagine someone walks into a room and says, "I want to be holy." What do we picture? A man on a mountain top? A man fasting? A woman whispering mystical secrets? But then comes the shock of this week's parashah. It says Kedoshim tiyu, "You shall be holy." And follows with what? "Don't steal. Don't lie. Pay your workers on time. Don't embarrass someone. Love your fellow Jew." This is holiness? My dear Rebbe, Rabbi Victor Miller, with thunder. Yes, that's Miller, with thunder. Yes, that's exactly what holiness is. Holiness is not escaping life. Holiness is elevating life. Rabbi Miller would say something revolutionary. The Torah doesn't want malachim. It doesn't want angels. It wants human beings who act like angels in the supermarket, in the kitchen, in their business. The hidden greatness of ordinary moments. A person is in a rush. The line is long. Someone cuts in. Most people react instantly. But an Orthodox Jew pauses, says nothing. No applause.
