0:00 Rabbi Eliyahu, whom we love very much, said here... he said a chiddush, a new insight. He spoke with me, he said a chiddush and asked a question, and after that I told him a completely different explanation, the opposite of his. But I want him to say his explanation first, and after that I refute his explanation and say a different one. Rabbi Eliyahu will first say his explanation.
0:25 All right. But say it your way. Yes, yes, Rebbe. Rabbi Eliyahu speaks. Mishnah 3: 'A house and an upper story belonging to two people that collapsed: the owner of the upper story told the owner of the house to build, and he does not want to build. Then the owner of the upper story builds the house and lives in it until he pays him his expenses.' So I understood that the house and the upper story are the Beis HaMikdash, the Holy Temple, the one below and the one above, and the owner of the upper story is the Holy One, blessed be He, and the owner of the house is us.
0:53 So the Holy One, blessed be He, tells the owner of the house to build, 'and he does not want to build', meaning that we, so to speak, do not want to build. So 'the owner of the upper story builds the house and lives in it': so the Holy One, blessed be He, has to build the house and live in it. So let us ask the Rav: What did the Holy One, blessed be He, say? Why does He not fulfill what is written here? Why does the Holy One, blessed be He, not fulfill this? Why does He not build the house, when He has to live in it? Both according to Rabbi Yehudah and according to the first Tanna. Also according to Rabbi Yehudah. That is what Rabbi Eliyahu says.
1:19 May I say my truth? Certainly, that is the interesting part, you may. But the question is: whom does the halachah follow, me or him? 'The halachah follows Nachmani', Rabbi Eliyahu. I love Rabbi Eliyahu's explanation, because that is what we need to happen. But I will tell you now. He said that the house is us and the upper story is the Holy One, blessed be He. Now I say the opposite.
1:45 'A house and an upper story belonging to two people that collapsed.' The house and the upper story: the house is the Beis HaMikdash, and the upper story is us. The Beis HaMikdash fell, and so did the Jewish people. The upper story is the Jewish people. 'I have seen the bnei aliyah, the people of the upper level, and they are few.' Those who count as the upper level are the few. 'Belonging to two people, that collapsed.' 'The owner of the upper story said': the tzaddik is the owner of the upper story, for he is a man of high level. 'He said to the owner of the house', the Owner, the Holy One, blessed be He. He tells Him: build! 'To build': build Your house, build the Beis HaMikdash.
2:14 He told the owner of the house to build, and the Holy One, blessed be He, 'and he does not want to build', He does not want to build, He is not building the Beis HaMikdash. 'Then the owner of the upper story...' What does the owner of the upper story do? What do the tzaddikim do? 'The owner of the upper story builds the house and lives in it.' The tzaddikim have to build the Beis HaMikdash, prepare all the vessels, turn the whole world around, do everything in our power to bring the geulah. But pay attention: 'the owner of the upper story builds the house and lives in it until he pays him his expenses.'

2:45 What does it mean, 'lives in it until he pays him his expenses'? 'Until he pays him his expenses': the expenses are all the costs, all the tears and all the self-sacrifice of all the holy ones who died sanctifying Hashem's Name. Rabbi Amnon of Mainz: who will pay for his suffering, when they sawed him into pieces, and everything they did to him? And Rabbi Shimshon of Ostropoli, and all the tears, and of King Shaul and King David and all the tzaddikim and all the holy ones who died sanctifying Hashem's Name: all their expenses, all 'his expenses', all the holiness, all the tears, all the self-sacrifice, all the blood, all the suffering, everything he went through.
3:19 Who collects this? Who receives this? It is Hashem; He must avenge this blood. So the owner of the upper story says, the owner takes... 'and lives in it until he pays him his expenses.' So he sits and rules and says: we invoke the merit of the holy ones who died for the sanctity of Your Name. We do everything in our power: we learn about the Beis HaMikdash, we await the Beis HaMikdash, we hope for the Beis HaMikdash, we build it, for our part, with the spiritual vessels, we wait for You to dwell in it.
3:46 Rabbi Yehudah says: 'This one, too, is living in what belongs to his fellow.' What does it mean, 'Rabbi Yehudah says: this one, too, is living in what belongs to his fellow'? It is not enough that we, the people of the upper level, all the Jewish people, everyone who wants the Beis HaMikdash, everyone who wants geulah, as if that were enough. Rather, one must also bring his fellow to want this same desire, so that my desire 'lives inside what is his fellow's'. My desire, the one I dwell in, the one I live, must also be inside my fellow: that my fellow, too, should want as I do that same level, that there be a Beis HaMikdash.
4:12 'And he must raise up a reward for him': one must strengthen him and encourage him and support him and give him strength and hope, so that he too will want it, and understand that this is the greatest reward in this world: that we came down to this world in order to receive, and to see the House of Hashem and the Kingship of Hashem and the complete geulah, which is the purpose above all purposes: to see the revelation of Heaven, the Kingship of the Holy One, blessed be He. So, 'to raise up a reward for him'. And pay attention, this is how it ends: 'Rather, the owner of the upper story builds the house.' We, the Jewish people, are the owners of the upper story; we build the house. We, not the Owner of the house. One need not wait for Him to build.
4:46 We... and according to Rabbi Yechiel of Paris, of the Baalei HaTosafos, it is possible to offer korbanos, to bring them to the Beis HaMikdash. One has to find the altar, the stones. Of course, this is not for now, because this is not the place and the time to do it, because there are disputes, and the Muslims are there, and all of that. It is not the time. But from the halachic standpoint, if they had made the place fit and put it in order... What happened back then, at the time when they conquered Jerusalem: they should have conquered it in a different way.
5:14 On the one hand they mark it as a day of joy; on the other hand it is a day of exile. The conquest should have been true and complete, so that the Beis HaMikdash could be built, and to make the ground ready for the geulah. But they did not do that. They left the main thing. They left the main thing, and then they in fact mark it as a kind of day of joy or a day of geulah. But 'of joy: what does it accomplish?' After all, in practice the crown was not given to the Queen, nor her honor.
5:41 It is like making a celebration for a groom and bride, and they did not bring the bride under the chuppah. So that has still not been done. 'Rather, the owner of the upper story builds the house.' We, the Jewish people, the owners of the upper story, must build the house. Truly, why, when Tisha B'Av falls on Shabbos, do we push it off? Of course, it is Rabbinic, whereas the fast of Yom Kippur is from the Torah, and it can fall on the holy Shabbos. But when Tisha B'Av, which is Rabbinic, falls on the holy Shabbos, we push it off to Motza'ei Shabbos.
6:06 And why is that? The Sfas Emes of Gur says: if the Jewish people weep on Shabbos, they will transgress the melachah of building, because their tears will build the Beis HaMikdash. They will transgress the melachah of building, because it will build the Beis HaMikdash out of the tears. We do not say Tikkun Chatzos on Shabbos, we do not weep over the Beis HaMikdash on Shabbos, because it truly builds: it would build the Beis HaMikdash, it would build the Mishkan. So, 'rather, the owner of the upper story builds the house': we, the Jewish people, are the owners of the upper story, who build the house, 'the house and the upper story, and roofs the upper story'. That is, we in fact also have to build the upper story and roof the upper story. The upper story is the Jewish people.
6:37 We must see to it that the Shechinah rests upon us in the meantime. The Shechinah: that is 'roofing the upper story'. It is like the sukkah. That is, we still do not merit the revelation of Heaven, the Kingship of Hashem; but at least we should conduct ourselves so that we are holy, that we roof the upper story, that all of us are holy and the Shechinah rests upon all of us, upon every one of the Jewish people. To merit this level, that the Shechinah rests upon all of us. 'And he sits in the house until he pays him his expenses.'
7:04 'And he sits in the house until he pays him his expenses.' 'And he sits in the house', and makes his claim, until the Holy One, blessed be He, gives him all the expenses: everything we have spent, all the blood, all the tears, all the self-sacrifice, from when the Jewish people went into exile, from the First Temple and from the Second Temple; everything the Jewish people went through, dying to sanctify Hashem's Name; all the slaughters and the harsh decrees and the suffering, and everything they went through; the whole exile of Spain, and the Inquisition, and the Holocaust, and all the blood and the self-sacrifice of the Jewish people. 'Until he pays him his expenses': all the tears that the Jewish people went through, and they waited, and said: we believe in the coming of Mashiach, and in the geulah, and in the Beis HaMikdash.
7:41 May it be His will that the Beis HaMikdash be built. So that is the second explanation. We have the first one, or the second. Whom does the halachah follow? Like you and like me, Rebbe. But we want the halachah... no, we want 'the halachah follows Nachmani': that the Owner of the upper story should come and build the house Himself. We want the Owner of the upper story to. But Rav, Rav, as found in the Chinuch: 'May it be Your will that You build', not 'that it be built'.
8:05 Come, let us build the Beis HaMikdash! He said that the tzaddik has to build.
8:30 You are the tzaddik, you have to build. Let us see you build. The main thing is always to lean on others, to rely on them, to throw off the responsibility. That is the easiest; the easiest thing is to throw off the responsibility. Each one must understand that he is the greatest tzaddik, he is the true tzaddik, he is the geulah, and without him the geulah will not come. So start to wake up, and stop saying: I am nothing, only the tzaddik. You are the tzaddik, you are the tzaddik; it is on you to take the responsibility, it is on you to take the responsibility. You are the tzaddik; you are going to build the Beis HaMikdash. Forward!
8:57 Can the Rav bless us? Go on. May the Holy One, blessed be He, bless this whole holy congregation. May you have salvations and miracles and wonders, a good life. Amen. With joy; I love you. And remember this special chiddush of Rabbi Eliyahu. So I say: the halachah follows Nachmani, because that is what we want: that the Owner of the upper story should come and build the house.
