Shalom Aleichem. Welcome to our special edition of a class on the Three Weeks. This week is the fast day of Shiva Asar B’Tammuz. Seventeen days in Tammuz. The Gemara in Ta’anis, the Mishnah says, there were five incidents that happened on Shiva Asar B’Tammuz. 1) One was Moshe Rabbeinu came down from the mountain, he saw the golden calf and the tablets which were given to us by HaShem to contain the Torah and give us morality and life were broken. 2) There was a guy, Apostomos, an emperor of Rome who burned the Torah. 3) There was a day that the daily sacrifice ceased to happen in the Temple. 4) There was a day that they breached the wall of Jerusalem. 5) Fifth one, I forgot, I hope you'll forgive me (an idol was placed in the Temple). Anyway, all these things happened on the 17th of Tammuz, and since the walls of the Yerushalayim were breached, it led to - three weeks later - the Temple being destroyed, and that's where we are today: With a destroyed Temple, where we can't really feel the presence of HaShem which rested openly on the Temple, we can't feel that closeness to HaShem that they felt at that time, all of this because the walls were breached, the Torah was broken, and the Torah was burned and so on. We have to understand, this is punishment? Well, Tehillim - Psalm 79 - talks about how HaShem let out His anger on the Jews. How? He allowed the Temple to be burned. The Arizal explains that Tisha B'Av, we do something very strange. Comes the night of Tisha B'Av, we sit on the floor, we say the dirges, lamentations, we read Eikha. We mourn - minimize the lighting in the house, we minimize our washing, our bathing, we don't eat, we fast, all in mourning over the Temple. And
