[music] >> It's Shiva Asar B'Tammuz, the day they broke the walls of Yerushalayim, leading to the Churban Beis Hamikdash three weeks later on Tisha B'Av. The Yerushalmi in the first perek in Yoma says, "Kol dor shelo nivna Beis Hamikdash, k'ilu hu charveiha." In every generation that the Beis Hamikdash is not rebuilt, it's as if that generation destroyed it. The question is, what's our responsibility? What exactly do we do? Where do we start? What do we have to fix? fix? The truth is that this question they had at the time of the Churban. The Gemara in Nedarim daf pei alef amud alef brings the pasuk in Yirmiyahu that asks, "Al me ha'aretz?" Why was the Beis Hamikdash destroyed? And the Gemara continues, "Dov v'zeh sh'alu l'chachamim." They asked this question to the chachamim, and they asked it to the nevi'im, and according to one girsa, they asked it to the malachim, "V'lo hayah t'shuva." And nobody knew the answer. Until Hakadosh Baruch Hu himself answered it, [music] like the pasuk in Yirmiyahu says, "V'yomar Hashem, 'Al lo zos asher azvu es Torasi asher lifneihem v'lo shom'u es Torasi asher lifneihem v'lo shom'u b'koli v'lo halchu vah.'" The Ran brings Rabbeinu Yonah who explains that Klal Yisrael was doing everything [music] right. They were learning Torah. They were keeping the Torah. The aveira was they were missing a certain chashivus, a certain appreciation for Torah, a chet so small and so subtle that even the greatest people in that generation didn't recognize it. Only Hakadosh Baruch Hu, Rabbeinu Yonah says, "Who knows machashevei lev," who knows what's going in the depths of everyone's heart, Hakadosh Baruch Hu had to reveal it.
