We are in the days of the Ben Hametzarim. According to Rabbeinu Ari, the Ben Hametzarim are 21 days. Until Tisha B'Av. Even though if you count from the 17th of Tammuz to Tisha B'Av is actually 22 days, but for whatever reason Rabbeinu Ari doesn't count Tisha B'Av. He says that itself is a holiday. It's a moed. And these 21 days are designated as the yearly mourning period for the Hurban Beit Hamikdash and the Hurban of Yerushalayim and the death of the tzaddikim. Although the Halacha says we're supposed to remember this every day, but we concentrate it more pronounced during the 21 days. The Gemara in Yoma is looking for the reason of the destruction. This is from the prophet Yirmiyahu. Yirmiyahu says, Al mah avdah ha'aretz? For what purpose? What was the reason? What's the root of why the land was destroyed? So it says they asked this question to Hachamim, Hachamim, they asked this question to Nevi'im, and they were not able to get a clear answer what the reason was. Until Akadosh Baruch Hu came down himself and he answered the question of Yirmiyahu "Al mah avdah ha'aretz?" And he said "Al ozvam et Torati. Al ozvam et Torati." He said because they left my Torah. The Gemara in Nedarim is struggling to understand what does it mean they left the Torah. If you look at the history in the times of the first Bet Hamikdash, they were studying Torah. They was learning. There was Yeshivot. Maybe there was other sins. There was Avodah Zarah a lot. There was Shfichut Damim. There was a lot of murder. There was immorality, but Torah there was.
