His tenure continued for four decades. The name Shimon HaTzaddik is probably familiar to many sitting here. He's mentioned at the beginning of Pirkei Avot, chapter 1. The Mishna says, Moshe kibel Torah miSinai u'mesara leYehoshua. Yehoshua leZekanim, u'Zekanim leNevi'im, u'Nevi'im mesaruha Anshei Knesset HaGedolah. The tradition of Judaism, the tradition of Torah, went from Moshe to Yehoshua, from Yehoshua thank you to the elders, from the elders to the prophets, and from the prophets to the Anshei Knesset HaGedolah, which literally means men of the Great Assembly, the Great Gathering. And this refers to a group of 120 sages who formed this unit called Knesset HaGedolah, the great unit, the great assembly, the great gathering. These were the leaders of the Jewish people following the destruction of the First Beit HaMikdash and the 70 years of the Babylonian exile, Jews came back, not so many, but some came back. 42,000 Jews came back from present-day Iraq and Iran back to the Holy Land to rebuild the Second Beit HaMikdash. The whole community needed to be revitalized. The Jewish people were naturally broken and devastated in more than one way, and the Anshei Knesset HaGedolah took the responsibility to galvanize, to energize, to rejuvenate the Jewish people spiritually, physically, financially, politically, militarily, and in many other ways, including the construction of the second base amikdash. Shimon HaTzaddik Mishurek Knesset HaGedolah. Shimon the righteous one was the last surviving member of this group of Anshei Knesset HaGedolah, which included some of the most prominent the most prominent figures of the Mordechai HaTzaddik, Ezra, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi, prophets, including Shimon HaTzaddik.
