0:00 Yes, tzaddikim, what are they learning? - Tractate Makkos - we have finished it. We have now started Tractate Kiddushin, the chapter HaIsh Mekadesh. - Beautiful, well done. How many times have you finished the tractate? - [unclear], but with review and repetition. - What, what? You already know it by heart, or what? - Yes.
0:29 - Shall we ask you a few questions? Yes? - Yes. - Well done. You hold up the world. Torah scholars - you sit, and you are holy and pure, you hold up the world. What a merit you have, that at such an age you sit and toil in Torah. You do not know how much the Holy One, blessed be He, [unclear], and what a merit your Rabbis have, who teach you the word of Hashem.
0:57 Especially in this generation, when we are in a generation so lowly and depleted and very, very far away, and we merit to sanctify the Name of the Holy One, blessed be He. You know that Tractate Makkos is a segulah to be saved from [unclear], It is a very great thing for holiness and purity; [unclear]. It is a very great thing for a person's holiness and purity: when he learns Tractate Makkos, it can very, very much help him to be holy and pure.
1:34 If it is possible to mention something nice. About what was it said, [unclear] "once in seventy years"? Page 7a. - [unclear]. - [unclear]. "Destructive," or... - [unclear].
1:59 - [unclear]. About whom was it said [unclear]? He used the interpreter. Which page is it? - [unclear]. Why did he do it? There? Where did he do it? He did it? - He did the [unclear]. Everyone knows the answer - together, right? Without an interpreter.
2:32 Without an interpreter, everyone knows the answer. What is the wording of the Gemara? [unclear]? [unclear]? [unclear]? [unclear]? Well done. The court was commanded to repair all the roads, right?

2:59 Why? Which page is it? So that [unclear] to reach the city of refuge, the city of refuge, right? The city of refuge. Where did they learn this from? "You shall prepare the road for yourself," "you shall prepare the road for yourself" - what comes next? What is the law of a person who entered by mistake into a householder's courtyard, and the householder killed him?
3:35 What is the law of a person who entered a householder's courtyard by mistake, and the householder [unclear] him? But maybe he has permission; maybe they will say [unclear], It is clear that he [unclear]. - Yes, it is clear that he [unclear]. - [unclear]. You already knew several answers; [unclear].
4:06 Which page? [unclear], side a. About what did Rava - Abaye - say, "There is no contradiction," does he dwell in it or in its outskirts? What is the difference? That is the page. Which page is it? Page 12a, or [unclear]? - 2a.
4:32 2a - why do you say that? Well done. So what does he say, "There is no contradiction"? What did he say, "There is no contradiction"? What else do we learn from this? Does he have to dwell? What does it mean? - If he wants, he wants. [unclear]? "Dwell in it" or in its outskirts - there is a difference. In it or in its outskirts, right?
4:59 What do you say? [unclear] that he is "in it" - in it, and not in its outskirts. It is written about it that he is "in it" - in it, and not in its outskirts. So you know that according to the halachah he must dwell inside the city. What did Rabbi Yitzchak learn about dividing the sin-offerings? There are sin-offerings, right? A person becomes liable for a sin-offering, Do you know which page this is?
5:29 Rabbi Yitzchak learned the dividing of sin-offerings? Which page is it? - Page 14a, right. Page 14a, right. What did he learn? What did he learn - but what was it? - Ah, that [unclear]. What? You said two; [unclear]. Ah, Rabbi Yitzchak, Yes, [unclear].
5:54 Why [unclear]? It is written [unclear]. [unclear], in Parshas Kedoshim it is written again, [unclear], Could it be? One and three? [unclear] for each and every one, or? Are there Torah scholars here?
6:26 What is the law of a person who ate tevel, untithed produce? - A dispute between Rabbi Shimon and the Sages. [unclear]? Rabbi Shimon [unclear], According to the Sages it is an olive's volume. Right. This is page 13a. Really? It is also a Mishnah, right. Page 16b, right?
6:58 And what is the distinction there, do you know? For a person who ate tevel - what is the law of a person who ate an olive's volume of tevel from which terumah gedolah or terumas ma'aser was not separated? What is the law? Do you know, [unclear]? Tevel from which [unclear] terumah gedolah. - We said that for ma'aser ani too, he does not get lashes. - No, that is about ma'aser ani; that is whether he is liable [unclear] Heaven or not, and he does not get lashes. That is about something else.
7:28 He does not get lashes. He only gets lashes, and is not liable by the judgment of Heaven. That is about ma'aser ani. I am asking what the law is if he [unclear] from it, he ate tevel from which he did not separate terumah gedolah and not terumas ma'aser. What is his law? Is he liable [unclear] Heaven, and gets lashes? Not liable [unclear] Heaven? Gets no lashes? What is the law? What you said about ma'aser ani is something else - there he gets lashes and is not liable by the judgment of Heaven; [unclear]. [unclear] he ate terumah, and [unclear] is liable for the terumas ma'aser.
7:57 So what, do they give him lashes? [unclear] on this also [unclear]. So what do you infer? So only [unclear]. There will be no lashes. There will be no lashes? A prize. Listen - but how do you know it so nicely? These are very difficult things. What is the law of a non-Kohen who ate from the olah offering outside the wall before the sprinkling? Before the sprinkling, before the sprinkling - what is the law? According to whose opinion is this? According to...? According to the opinion of Rabbi Shimon Where did they learn something about the pe'os? Pe'ah?
8:37 Something about the pe'ah? Something about the pe'ah? Anything? How many lashes does he get? One who shaves the beard - how many lashes does he get? - Five. - Where is this in the Shulchan Aruch, do you know? No? Where is it? Yoreh De'ah? Right. Don't they also know it with the halachah, at the end?
9:05 - [unclear] in halachah, but [unclear]. - Ah, beautiful, but they know the whole book, they are real Torah scholars; they know things that at their age... You want to give them a round of applause here, for Torah scholars. You know that to learn Torah - you know how much toil of Torah that is. But beyond learning Torah, when you learn, you sit and think all the time about the Holy One, blessed be He, and you think how it is possible to draw out the will of Hashem from every thing, you are lions, you are mighty ones, because you hold up the whole world.
9:44 The Holy One, blessed be He, rejoices in you very, very much. I want that, with the help of Hashem, you will continue, and you will know, with the help of Hashem, [unclear]. What you should know, the most important, is that the Holy One, blessed be He, rejoices in you and loves you, and we strengthen your hands, with the help of Hashem, and you will rise higher and higher in holiness, in purity; and listen to your parents, to your sages, to the Rabbis, with the help of Hashem, and you will rise higher and higher in holiness, in purity, in dveikus, [unclear].
10:12 If I tell you - this is a beautiful story, from which you will learn a lot of mussar. Have you heard of the Rogatchover? Rabbi Yosef Rosen, who was one of the greatest of the sages, of the greatest tzaddikim; he was a very great genius, and he was a man of very, very great wisdom. And [unclear], and he was a tzaddik, he was holy, and many who saw him describe: once he came to a certain beis midrash, He finished the Shas close to - more than, they say - hundreds of times; he finished the Shas.
10:47 He came - there was once that he came to a certain beis midrash, and they asked him to give them some derashah. And the Rogatchover said to them, "I am not a darshan, I do not know how to give a derashah, I do not know how to learn, I do not know anything" - that is how he spoke of himself. And then he said to them, "Perhaps I know a little how to say Tehillim." That is how he spoke of himself. Surely you have heard how great he was. And then he took a Tehillim, sat in the synagogue and began to read Tehillim, and began to cry to the Holy One, blessed be He.
11:19 And there were some sages there who knew the greatness of the Rogatchover, and everyone had heard of him, [unclear] when he was one of the greatest sages in his generation; everyone had heard of him. And they did not quite understand what the matter was in what he did; he did not want to teach them, and did not want to give them a derashah from his genius, before so many people who were there, who had asked him for some strengthening, some word. And then one of the sages who was there, [unclear], a Torah scholar who was there, said to them, "I will tell you what he wants to teach you.
11:51 When you see a great man like him, learn that sometimes the greatest mussar is to take a book of Tehillim and pray to the Holy One, blessed be He, to call out to the Holy One, blessed be He. That is what he taught you." The Rogatchover would teach people also from his movements, and from his deeds, and from his conduct, and from his speech: how to behave, how to conduct yourself, what to do, how to serve the Holy One, blessed be He. You know that to receive semichah for the rabbinate from him - he was very sharp of mind, and he was very gentle with simple, good people, and whoever would come at him with argument, and try like that to come at him in a way, to haggle with him - then the Rogatchover would make him small in a few moments,
12:34 and he did not like to do that. So once they heard that he ordained for the rabbinate, and they wanted a letter from him, because his name had spread through the whole world, so they wanted to receive from him some letter of approbation. A line of rabbis went in to him, several rabbis. One went in with pride, with a robe from some place; shouts are heard in the room, he comes out - the Rogatchover sent him away from there, from the room. After that the second went in, after that the third went in, after that the fourth, after that the fifth, until they had all come out of the room, and no one stayed in the room. There was no one who came out with a letter. They all came out - they ran away from there.
13:12 Until one certain man went in; they saw him quiet in the room, and after a few moments he came out with a letter, and they see a letter from the Rogatchover, with a signature in his own handwriting, that the Rogatchover relies on him, and gave him semichah for the rabbinate. Immediately they came to that one, and began to ask him all kinds of questions in halachah, that he should clarify for them [unclear] in halachah, because, they said, this one is ordained by the Rogatchover. He was silent and did not answer them, and he said to them, "Go ask the Rogatchover; I am not giving the answer."
13:41 Ask Rabbi Yosef, Rabbi Yosef. They went in to him, to Rabbi Yosef, the Gaon of Rogatchov, and asked him, what will be there? How did you give him such a letter? What will be? So he said to them, look: all those who came in, whom I asked questions, they began - when I asked them a question, they began to raise objections to me.
14:07 They did not know the answer, so they said to me, 'One moment, but maybe like this, maybe like this, maybe like this' - they did not understand my question, and they began to quarrel with me over my question when I asked them. They did not give me the answer; [unclear] they began to haggle with me over the question. Whereas he, when I asked him the question, he gave me an answer that was not sufficient enough, and when I asked him for the resolution of the question, then he said to me, 'I do not know; I will open a book; if I will not know, and if I do not understand, I will show Your Honor.'
14:39 Immediately I gave him the letter. And those I asked began to argue, and began with all that - I saw that these are not Torah scholars. The way of a true Torah scholar: he will say, 'I do not know, it needs to be clarified, it needs thought, it needs to be weighed, it needs to be looked into.' That is the answer I expected, and so I gave him the letter. That was his greatness, of that Torah scholar who received the letter from the Rogatchover.
15:05 What I come to tell you: that you, always - do not be embarrassed when you learn, whether you understand or do not understand. Know that even when it is hard for you, and even when you do not understand something, you should ask to hear it once more. You know that the Maharam Schick would already go over every matter more than 40 times, meaning that in Heaven he will hold liable everyone who said, 'I did not understand, it was hard for me to understand.'
15:32 The Torah is sweet. The question is how we learn it, we teach it. That we learn it nicely and give out its sweetness. You will see that you will feel more and more, until you know the whole Shas. With Hashem's help, you will learn the Yerushalmi and the Bavli, and the entire Torah, with Hashem's help. Pesikta, Tosefta, Mechilta, Sifra, Sifrei - you will learn it all, and you will be holy and pure, and rise higher and higher in kedushah and purity.
16:00 And this is what the Gaon of Rogatchov comes to teach us. To teach us always that even when we are weak and it is hard for us, maybe we could not understand as well as that Torah scholar, we will always come, open a book, check, ask and ask the rabbi, the Rosh Yeshivah, and learn from him, and that is how we will rise and be elevated. On the contrary - "and this stumbling is under your hand" - precisely: a person does not master the words of Torah unless he has stumbled in them.
16:29 This is your greatness. With Hashem's help, you will rise higher and higher, and flourish with Hashem's help, and succeed. Hashem... we have known your rabbi for many years, that he is a Torah scholar, and all the honored rabbis, your whole yeshivah, a holy yeshivah, Torah scholars, that teaches the Torah beautifully, in depth, in holiness, in halachah, and with Hashem's help, you will succeed.
16:53 May your borders grow with many students, length of days and years to you, to the rabbis, to all of you - salvations for you, and all the blessings and good abundance, good that is seen and revealed, with joy and gladness of heart. And so may it be His will. Amen. Thank you very much... many students, thank you very much, salvations, a good life, good [unclear]. Sweetness, the sweetness of the Torah - look what blessings they want, what tzaddikim you are.
17:38 Thank you very much... What a joy for you, like this. Well done. Well done, well done, truly well done, well done, [unclear], well done, the son - well done, nachas and joy from all the children, all these children, with Hashem's help, [unclear] - this is the one who passed so nicely, right? This one?
18:20 - Yes, yes. All of them, all of them here, I'm telling you, they all answered the questions [unclear] this time, all of them. Amazing, the whole week. Well done to you all, well done. Torah scholars, Torah scholars, Look how nice.
