in the cloud it's recording now okay let's begin [Music] so um Umar I wanted you to perhaps um um kind of introduce yourself and the impetus for the uh the conference and then um we will introduce um ourselves and and begin our discussion thank you very much uh personal I'd like to thank uh immediately Stacy for undertaking this uh difficult task of uh chairing this conference and uh hopefully it'll have an impact to beyond the people who anticipate because it'll be broadcast afterwards and I think that these things they've watched much more than the participants who are involved with it I started this group several years ago the orthops was against the Discrimination racism in order that there should be some voice in our community which um includes a rabbi includes other people who stand up for orthography being Against Racism discrimination which does not always seem to be the case unfortunately I I'd started because of internal discrimination of by uh ashkenazim against but that was the first incident which brought me to I mean that the group is needed as I had students at the time were very disturbed by what they saw going on uh in the Orthodox world and I figured it has to be a voice which opposes it and over time we developed a group it's a various different other aspects of discrimination racism um cultivating relationships among ourselves to try to understand each other and to try out in our Orthodox society and to try and improve ourselves in this respect uh several times it's become apparent to me that we need to reach out and understand each other in ways in which we don't always understand
