i think in general there are two elements to friendship and you can have them separately and it's very reinforcing if you have them together i'll describe the two elements and talk about what happens when they come together and then i'll try to put it in a larger context i don't think there's much discussion of friendship as a topic in torah classes it may just be a matter of terminology as i will show you as we go along one element in friendship is enjoying shared activities and then you have selected friends for different activities we have tennis friends and political discussion friends and mountain climbing friends and shakespeare friends and and you wouldn't dream of talking politics with the mountain climbing friend because it would be boring beyond belief or you're so divided that there's nothing to share but mountain climbing you really enjoy doing together friendships like that i think are reasonably common i think they're positive i think they're valuable i think they're important a person should not be isolated he should have temporary periodic isolation as an option one doesn't have to always be twittering uh but to know that you are connected to have friendships which doesn't count twitter because you can't do the significant on twitter where you share some aspect of life with someone that you enjoy sharing i think it's very positive aspect of life these friendships tend to be fragile let's suppose that your interests change you used to be very heavily invested in
