Yes, the final lesson of the year 5785. On the night of Rosh Hashanah, God willing, this year it falls on the coming Shabbat, Erev Shabbat and Motzaei Shabbat. The two nights of Rosh Hashanah. We have signs that the Jewish people have followed as a custom. We bring a ram's head to the table, we bring leeks, beets, dates, and all of this for a sign. The Gemara says in Keritot on page 6, and also in Tractate Horayot, Abaye said: "Signs are significant." Since you said there is a sign, which is something that symbolizes something specific for us, it is customary for a person on the night of Rosh Hashanah to eat things as a good omen. Those who have looked at the prayer books we have, there are all sorts of things we are accustomed to eating for a good sign. Right? If we ask ourselves what is the good sign when eating a date? "Yitamu"(may they be consumed)–our enemies, our haters, and all who wish us ill. Why, what does a date have to do with it? Apparently, the phrasing of "tamar"( date) goes with "yitamu"(they shall be consumed), our enemies, yes, Meir'tzel. A sort of play on words. So our Rabbis say that the palm tree, upon which the date grows, has nothing in it that is wasted, and it stands straight and upright. Why are the people of Israel compared to a palm tree? Just as a palm tree has only one heart directed toward heaven, completely aimed in a straight line toward heaven, so too, Israel has only one heart directed toward their Father in heaven.
