every year as the high holiday season approaches we start making our Happy New Year phone calls and somewhere towards the end of those calls we might throw in a quick one liner such as oh and by the way if there's anything I've done to hurt you this year I really hope you forgive me but is that really enough I'd like to share a story with you there was once a boy who had a really bad temper so his father gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he loses his temper he should just hammer one nail into the back of the fence by the end of the first day there were 37 nails end of the first day there were 37 nails in the fence over the next few weeks as the boy learned to control his anger the number of nails gradually dwindled down he discovered that it was easier to hold his temper than to drive nails into the fence all day finally the day came when the boy didn't lose his temper at all his father then told him that he should pull out one nail for each day that is able to hold back his temper the days went by and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone the father took his son by the hand he led him over to the fence
