welcome to Sparks of History where world history and Jewish history meet we are extremely pleased to have with us today professor John howler Professor howler earned his PhD in history from the University of Delaware and is also a fellow of the royal Historical Society Professor howler's areas of expertise include medieval warfare the Crusades and military history Professor howler teaches milit AR history at the Army command and general staff College located in Fort lenworth Kansas Dr howler has written and edited numerous books including but not limited to seven myths of military history The Siege of AKO 1189 1191 saladan Richard the lionhart in the battle that decided the Third Crusade military cultures and Marshall Enterprises in the Middle Ages where Heaven and Earth meet essays on medieval Europe and today we will be discussing the very for joining us today appreciate it very much my pleasure great to be here okay uh just to begin uh what period we said seven centuries but what period of time does your book cover and why was that chosen by you the book covers the 7th Century um I really start in the year 614 and go all the way into about the late 13th century including the book in about the 1270s 1280s and the reason for doing that um it was it was deliberate I wanted to look at what I believe are the the the real formative centuries of medieval Jerusalem where the the major events were happening and um you have sort of um the the most notable and important shifts in terms of events um and also I wanted to start after the ancient period and that was a deliberate Choice um in my reading there's been an awful lot written about Jerusalem uh in
