0:00 He wants a blessing. He stands and toils so much. May the Holy One, blessed be He, bless you too, the crew. What are your names? Eliyahu, and Amir. Amir. And Yigal. May you have a good year, a good and sweet life, good tidings, and may you succeed. May you have joy, you and all your families. 'Blessed are you to Hashem, Maker of heaven and earth.' All the blessings and good bounty. And Eliyahu? Your name, sir? Eliyahu. Eliyahu.
0:26 May you have a good year — you, all your households, all your families. A good year, health, a good life, and all the blessings and good bounty. Honored Rav, people here believe that your blessing works miracles. Is that true? I don't know what works miracles. I think it is this people, this wondrous people, and the Creator, Who answers every Jew, everyone who is in distress — the Holy One, blessed be He, answers him. You know, there is a verse: 'Hashem is close to all who call upon Him, to all who call upon Him in truth.'
0:56 If you call to the Holy One, blessed be He, in truth... I simply call to Him in truth. I serve Him cleanly, in truth; I pray, simply. He hears your blessing too; He hears everyone's blessing. I don't think there is something special in me that makes Him hear me. I call to Him in truth. Anyone who calls to Him in truth — He answers him. He answered all the generations before us. We are not used to rabbis who play music. What is the purpose of the niggun?
1:25 With the niggun — I'll explain to you, sir. First of all, if you want to know: music — at the feast of Achashverosh, as you know, sir, there was everything. There was wine, and there was food, and a banquet, and joy. But one thing there was not: there was no music. Why? Achashverosh knew that music would turn their hearts back to their G-d in Heaven. In music there is, on the one hand, something very simple, very innocent, great simplicity.
1:52 Simplicity. I love that very much — that it is simple. And music connects the... I call it the great language, the greatest international language. I can sit in China in front of a million Chinese people, play them a sad niggun — they will all weep. If I want to play them a happy niggun — they will all rejoice. Without speaking to them. Music is something that connects all of humanity, all created beings. Even animals, beasts, snakes — they respond to a niggun.
2:22 Music connects all... — When you play wrapped in a tallis, what is the purpose? I stayed in the tallis because of the prayers; we had prayed Mussaf, and I stayed in the tallis — I simply keep it on until the end of the prayers. As long as I haven't finished everything yet, No. When I'm in the studio I also play with headphones, to hear the fine nuances. — But people can hear music in many places.

2:47 The Rav plays music — what is your purpose? The purpose is for it to stir feeling, to sing a few songs that draw people close. You know, we have heard so many sounds — so many sounds of sadness, so many sounds of weeping. Music gives the soul something that calms, that connects. My purpose is to do only good — that people be strengthened, that things be good for them, that they have tranquility, that they have contentment.
3:16 That is the purpose: to create something clean in the heart, and to cleanse it. Music gives something like a cleansing of one's inner self, like a cleaning inside the inner chambers. That is my purpose, simply. — Are you in fact founding a new Chassidus here? No. I — I'm the opposite. I have no Chassidus, I don't... I'm very simple. I walk a very simple path, wholeheartedly.
3:44 I am in my own corner. I don't force myself on anyone, I don't impose my opinion on anyone. I sit in my corner, learning, praying, playing music, trying to do good, to light up the good in the world. I don't think I am founding anything. I'm not founding a new Chassidus. I am revealing the light that was put out. Simply, there is a very great light in the souls of Israel, in every person, in every creature in the world.
4:10 In every creature in the world there is very great light and good. And one needs to know how to draw the light out of created beings. In everything in creation there is light; in everything in creation there is a revelation of G-dliness, there is good — and we need to light up that good in humanity. We came into this world. You see, the Holy One, blessed be He, created the whole world that you see. And in this world there are Jewish people, non-Jews, animals — there are all kinds.
4:36 The world is full of humanity, of living creatures. We must give respect to every creature. The purpose is to give respect to created beings. I think what I put the emphasis on is this: I teach the Torah and I give a platform to everyone. With me there is no difference between anyone. I don't give more respect to this one or less to that one. I respect each person as he is, and I don't force my opinion on anyone.
5:01 I say my truth, I teach and hold to the book, to what is written, and I don't add things of my own. The Torah teaches us that we must give respect to all created beings. That is what the Holy One, blessed be He, taught us. — One last question, with your permission. There are many paths. There is Breslov, there is Gur, there are the Litvaks. What is the Rav's path? In five sentences. My path is not to disqualify any of the paths.
5:33 You know, I'll tell you, sir: you asked a very wise question. Today, the way we look at things — you know, the whole way of looking is very external. Our way of looking needs to be inward. The goal is to look further ahead. My path — I want to see everyone uplifted, and that things be good. I am very sensitive, very, very much so, and I very much want to see people have good and benefit. To my sorrow, I deal with a great many hard cases, a great many hard situations people are in, all kinds of situations — whether Jews, or even non-Jews.
6:14 And I try to do good. My path is simply this: there is a Jew who was sad, or any person who was wherever he was, and now he has come to light and to joy — that is my path. My path is to see someone who was on a side that is not good, and now he is on a good side, and he is glad, and he is happy, and it is good for him — that is my path. I cannot call it by any name, because I am simply a simple, wholehearted Jew, on my own, trying to do good.
6:45 That's all. I am not looking to follow a path or to lead a path — not a Chassidus and not a path — only to learn, to play music, to do good, to bring joy, and to shine the light that already exists. The light exists, you know; one only has to remove the curtain and show it to everyone. That is what I think. Thank you very much for the time you gave us. Thank you very much. If you want to ask me another question, you may.
7:12 Do you want to ask something more? Ask me, sir. No, no — ask. How did you become such a scholar? They say you have known the whole Torah since the age of 16. — I'll tell you. They say: 'Whatever the Merciful One does, He does for the good.' 'Whatever is hateful to you, do not do to your fellow' — that is the whole Torah. The Torah is a book.
7:39 To know the statutes and the laws of Hashem — that is no great feat; the computer knows them too. If you look in a computer — you can go into the computer, you can find out everything you want inside the computer. But nobody travels to it, to the computer; nobody travels to receive a blessing from it, nobody travels to get advice from it, and we have not seen people attach themselves and cling to the computer because it knows the whole Torah. The point is not to know the whole Torah.
8:05 The knowing of the whole Torah is the fulfilling of the Torah. I think that on Simchas Torah, when we begin the Torah — we don't finish the Torah. You know, on Simchas Torah we rejoice over the completion of the Torah and over the beginning of the Torah. The real joy of Simchas Torah is because we are beginning. To finish the Torah is no great feat. To know the whole Torah — the computer knows it too. The virtue is to fulfill the Torah, to do the good that is written in the Torah.
8:32 And sadly, today there are many people who look at the Torah and know that there is the Torah scroll — they are so busy with the cloak, the mantle of the Torah scroll, and not busy with the writing that is written inside. And as for fulfilling the whole Torah — not for nothing did the Sages say, about the whole Torah, all of it: 'Convert me on condition that you teach me the whole Torah while I stand on one foot.' He told him: 'Whatever is hateful to you, do not do to your fellow.'
8:56 In this humaneness, in this saying, in this fulfillment, the whole Torah is contained. Because the whole Torah is, in practice, simply the Creator's will that this world be without wars, without hatred, without jealousy, without rivalry — that room be given to every creature. One must give room, respect created beings, love created beings, and bring peace to the world. This is the purpose for which the Holy One, blessed be He, gave us the Torah. This is the Torah.
9:25 That's it; this is the purpose. This is the whole Torah. And when you learn this, and you learn the wisdom of Hashem and the way of Hashem, then the Holy One, blessed be He, can let you, a little, make use of the time and broaden your horizons, and also play music. You know — take playing music. I didn't go and study at some university of music. I play. Here, I play all kinds of compositions of my own that I made up — old ones.
9:50 All kinds. The compositions. — What music do you listen to when you are at home? I like only classical music. I don't listen to singers; I play only that kind of music — classical, quiet, feeling. I am very, very drawn to feeling, to niggunim of feeling. That is the purpose. That's it. I am very simple, that's all. Very simple, sir. Thank you very much.
10:15 Thank you very much. It was a pleasure to meet you. A great pleasure. A good and sweet year. — A good year. Thank you very much, sir. Thank you very much. Thank you all very much. A good month. A good year. You are always welcome to come to me, whenever you like, gladly.
